Lyme Disease

Islay went in for her  Spring checkup, and the report was extremely positive - down a couple of pounds (lucky dog!) and fit as a fiddle.  But the next day there was a voice mail from the vet tech to ring the office.  Naturally, I didn't get the call until after the office was closed.

So, the next morning I checked in and was told that Islay has Lyme bacteria in her blood but not Lyme disease.  The treatment recommended was antibiotics for a month, but this just gets the bacteria under control.  To prevent the disease, she needs vaccinations at two weeks and four weeks during the time she's taking antibiotics.

And vaccinations annually thereafter.

I was depressed by this news, because she has been such a happy and healthy dog, but I realized that this would not affect her a great deal and probably not impact her mortality.

Yet again I was reminded of the fragility which frames all our lives but more poignantly in her for me.  She is a therapy dog in every sense of the word, and seeing her and Karen makes my day every day we are all three together.
